Causes of Asthma :

health care concepts

Asthma is the obstruction of bronchial tubes that results in an inability to expel air from the lungs.  The mucous glands within the bronchial tubes secrete an increased amount of mucus and further obstruct the passage of air.  The narrow passageways do not allow air to be expelled and the patient coughs and gasps to breathe in and breathe out in order to restore normal respiratory function.

Following factors may cause asthma:

  • Air and industrial pollution – Air pollution is the main cause for causing asthma.  Air is polluted by toxic gases emitted by vehicles, smoke and fly ash emanating from chimneys of industrial units, thermal power houses.  We cannot do much to get over the problem.  Poisonous gases, dust, dirt, are the potent factors to pollute air.  When such polluted air is inhaled, 8 out of 10, if not all, persons are bound to suffer from breathing problems – more so from bronchial asthma.  Working in cotton mills, cloth mills, tobacco processing companies, drug and chemical mills, flour mills, paints, and fertilizers, sweepers, maid or man servants working in houses, servants engaged to look after per animals, animal dander, water treating plants, gas manufacturing units engaged in processing or dealing in diesel, petrol and other petroleum products are definite health hazards.  But due to economic compulsions and family responsibilities most of the people are obliged to continue working with such units which are health hazards.  Such pollutions inhalations are, no doubt, great health hazards, but are unavoidable due to question of subsistence.
  • Heredity – If there is a family history of asthma, there is every possibility that offspring may also inherit the same from their parents.  In some cases, tendency to asthma may also develop if grand parents also suffered from asthma.   It hardly matters whether there a family history of asthma on maternal, paternal or both the sides.  If both the parents are suffering from asthma, the disease is likely to appear in early childhood or may surface at or before onset of puberty.
  • Pet animals – Animals having, hair fur and feathers like cats, dogs, pigeons, and parrots are potential factors in causing asthma.

To conclude, humidity, cold, thunderstorm is the predisposing causes to cause asthma.  Asthma patients, who are worse in a hot season, improve considerably when they go to a hill station.  This improvement cannot be attributed exclusively to the change from hot to cold but due to non-existence allergic factors like lessened dust, change in environment and change in pollens and plants.
